3D CT – digital diagnostics
Dental 3D CT: a gentle and advanced digital diagnostic technique for precise treatments
5 reasons why you should have your teeth replaced with implants
What is 3D-CT in dentistry?
Dental 3D CT or digital volume tomography is a gentle, three-dimensional radiological procedure that provides a uniquely detailed and complete image of the lower jaw, upper jaw and dentition, which is essential for accurate dental diagnosis.
This state-of-the-art type of X-ray not only helps your dentist detect a dental problem, but also allows you to have a quick, gentle examination (30-40 seconds) with less radiation exposure.
Why is a 3D dental CT scan better than a 2D digital panoramic X-ray?
Digital panoramic X-rays also play an important role, as they give the dentist a comprehensive picture of the entire tooth structure. However, a dental 3D CT scan can show every detail of your teeth and oral cavity, including the structure of the jawbone, with an accuracy of one hundredth of a millimetre.
With a panoramic X-ray, all layers are superimposed due to the two-dimensionality of the procedure, which means that many details remain hidden. In addition, panoramic x-rays are distorted to a certain degree, which also makes accurate treatment planning difficult. Dental 3D CT, on the other hand, provides an absolutely accurate and distortion-free image of the oral cavity.
In which cases do we use dental 3D CT scans at 5DENT?
In addition to simple X-rays, dental 3D CT scans can also provide dentists with information that can greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of treatment. Thanks to digital imaging, many more and more complex problems can be treated, reducing the risk factors for future interventions. Dental 3D CT scanning is an indispensable tool in many cases where other imaging techniques (panoramic X-ray, intraoral X-ray) do not provide a sufficiently accurate image:
- Detecting hidden sources of pain with dental 3D CT: Often the source of pain in the teeth is unknown. Even the smallest lesion that could cause pain is not invisible on a dental 3D CT scan.
- Dental 3D CT before tooth extraction: When teeth are surgically removed, it is necessary to visualise the position of the tooth root in relation to the nerve tracts. A dental 3D CT scan can show this accurately.
- Checking the bone stock for dental implants with 3D CT: 3D CT scans can accurately show the width and height of the jaw bone stock so that it can be determined whether there is sufficient bone volume and density to safely place implants. In cases of long tooth loss, bone augmentation may be necessary. To assess this accurately, a dental 3D CT scan is always required, which can determine the bone thickness and ideal position for placing dental implants with an accuracy of tenths of a millimetre.
- Use of dental 3D-CT before root canal treatment: Inflammation in the area of the tooth root can be hidden by conventional scans. With the 3D CT scan, however, every detail of the inflammation becomes visible and analysable.
- Detecting dental abscesses with 3D CT: Whether they are growths, dead teeth, untreated or impacted wisdom teeth, cysts or massive calculus, dental abscesses can cause serious bacterial infections that can negatively affect the entire body. The symptoms of dental abscesses are often not obvious, so it is important to examine them effectively with 3D CT to prevent more serious diseases and inflammations.
- Assessment of temporomandibular joint lesions using dental 3D CT: The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. If you experience pain in the joint or ear when chewing or at rest, it is probably a disorder of the masticatory system. Dental 3D CT can clearly diagnose the disorder and help you get the most appropriate treatment.

What to do before a dental 3D CT scan?
- Our knowledgeable staff will inform you in detail about the intake process to ensure the success of the examination
- Before a dental 3D CT scan, it is important to remove all metal objects from the neck up that could interfere with the scan: Necklaces, earrings, body jewellery, glasses and other accessories.
- A dental 3D CT scan is performed in a standing position. Therefore, it is important to remain as still as possible during the scan to avoid blurring the image.
How is a dental 3D CT scan created at 5DENT?
A digital CT scanner consists of a radiation source and a detector opposite it. During the procedure, they rotate in a 360-degree circle around your head. The device takes a series of two-dimensional images, which are then processed into a three-dimensional version using computer software. This state-of-the-art procedure enables a complete spatial image of the dentition and skeleton with a measurement accuracy of tenths of a millimetre.
