Dental implants

What dental restorations can be attached to implants?

In case the patient still has some natural teeth, bridges and crowns can be affixed to implants. These are fixed restorations, which are prepared by our dental technician based on the impression, and the dentist fixes them onto the universal post abutments affixed to the implant screw. When ready, they will function just like any other tooth.

In case of a completely boneless jaw the inserted 6-8 implants can also support fixed bridges. After the insertion of 2-4 implants per jaw the complete, removable denture can be securely used with the application of some copulative element (bar attachment, precision attachment, telescopic crown). This way the use of denture adhesive can be avoided, and you will be able to eat the types of food that you have had to deny yourself because of your traditional removable denture.

What to do if your bone quality is not sufficient for implantation?

Before the treatment a panoramic x-ray is taken, and if based on this your dentist and oral surgeon find the quality of your jaw bone insufficient for implantation, they might recommend bone augmentation to you. In some cases the bone is not sufficient, and in other cases bone grafting might be necessary. A precondition of bone augmentation is good general health, adequate oral hygiene, and the quantity and quality of the existing bone is also a very important factor.

One method of bone augmentation performed at our dental clinic involves removing a piece of the patient’s own jaw bone and building it into the hole. Another, more common method is filling up the cavity with synthetic bone grafting materials. In both cases 6 months of healing time is needed, during which the original bone matter and the synthetic grafting material integrate, become stable, and the implant can be inserted.

Sinus lift is a treatment involving the augmentation of the bone tissue in the upper jaw around molars. We perform this treatment when the bone thickness decreases due to the lack of a tooth, and the sinus is just a few millimetres above this area, which could jeopardize the success of the implantation. Sinus lift is done using synthetic bone grafting materials.

How to take care of restorations affixed to implants, and how long can they be used?

The life span of implants if the patient maintains good oral hygiene is at least 15-20 years usually. As for tooth replacements affixed to implants, 5dent Dental Clinic highly recommends its patients to take advantage of the complimentary annual dental check-up and tartar removal.

Taking care of bridges and crowns affixed to implants is similar to that of natural teeth. Besides brushing them three times a day we recommend flossing and rinsing once a day.

It is advisable to clean the fixed parts of dentures affixed with implants with a toothbrush after every meal. Removable dentures must be cleaned using a brush and denture cleaning tablets, too. You may want to consider re-lining your denture about every two years, which should be done when you feel that your tooth replacement has become rather loose. 5dent Dental Clinic would be glad to help you maintain the validity of your guarantee through follow-up care.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant – to give a simple definition – is an artificial substitute for the natural root of a previously removed tooth. Dental implantation is the most up-to-date way of dental restoration, which has the least impact on the other teeth. The aim of implantation is complete restoration, through creating aesthetic and totally functional tooth replacements. The implant fitted into the jaw provides long-term support for various dental abutments. An implant can help replace a missing tooth but by fitting 6-8 implants into a completely toothless jaw, fixed tooth replacements can be produced. The implant is fitted into the jaw bone by the oral surgeon according to the dentist’s plans at 5dent Dental Clinic, and after the healing phase your dentist prepares your tooth replacements in cooperation with the dental technician.

When is dental implantation the right solution?

Dental implantation might be the right solution in a great number of cases, for patients from the age of 18 to even 108. The most important preconditions of dental implantation are good general health, proper oral hygiene as well as sufficient bone quality. The latter is checked by the dentist and the oral surgeon with the help of a panoramic x-ray.

5dent Dental Clinic highly recommends implantation in the following cases:

In case of missing teeth, if the neighbouring teeth are completely healthy and you would not like to have them chiselled. A crown or bridge can be attached to the implant later. When the missing tooth or teeth are at the end of the row, when a bridge cannot replace the tooth, and you would not like to have a removable prosthesis. In such cases the crown or bridge can be attached to an implant. In cases when there are only a few stable teeth per jaw, we can prepare even a fixed bridge by fitting a couple of implants into the right places. In case of a completely toothless jaw, implantation can give you various possible solutions. Fitting 2-4 implants into the jaw can affix a removable denture, and through the insertion of 6-8 implants a fixed bridge can be prepared.

What materials are dental implants made of?

5dent Dental Clinic applies dental implants made of pure, unalloyed titanium. This material has a great advantage: it does not damage adjacent tissues and its surface is not affected by outside factors, that is, it is non-corrosive. It is perfectly compatible with the human body, and it does not cause any immune reactions.

How to prepare for implantation and oral surgery?

It is advisable to eat one or two hours before implantation and oral surgery because it takes the anaesthesia several hours to wear off and chewing should be avoided during this time. You should appear at our dental clinic half an hour before your appointment so that we can do all the necessary administration. This will give you the opportunity to discuss details with our oral surgeon.

How long does implantation take and what does it involve?

Implantation – when it involves the insertion of only a few implants – generally takes half an hour including preparations. More implants can be inserted in about an hour. Our oral surgeon needs half an hour to one hour to perform bone augmentation. After the operation you should not experience more inconvenience than after tooth extraction. Before your treatment at 5dent Dental Clinic you can select the anaesthetic, sedative or general anaesthetic procedure that best suits your needs.

What to do after implantation and oral surgery?

The ice pad that our dental clinic provides you with should be re-cooled from time to time if needed, and it is strongly recommended that the area of the operation should be cooled from outside for ten minutes twice an hour on the first three days after the implantation or oral surgery. You should take the antibiotics and apply the antiseptic solution as prescribed by the oral surgeon of 5dent Dental Clinic, and you can take painkillers if necessary. When brushing your teeth you need to avoid the area of implantation or bone augmentation but you need to clean the other teeth appropriately. Make sure you are very careful when rinsing your mouth in order to protect the wound.

Dairy products should be avoided for three days after tooth extraction, implantation or any kind of oral surgery because the bacteria in the milk can cause inflammation, which can adversely affect the healing process. Following the treatment it is advisable to eat soft, puréed food (such as apple purée or bananas) for a few days. Spicy food, smoking, drinking alcohol, coffee and tea should also be avoided.

Sports activities, demanding physical activities, hot steam and using the sauna are contra-indicated for a week after the treatment. You should be very careful when blowing your nose or sneezing after bone augmentation or sinus lift.

If you choose one of the sedative or general anaesthetic procedures, and you plan to arrive at our dental clinic in your own car, please remember to bring a person who will help you with driving on the way home if necessary.

What are the steps of implantation?

The following steps describe all the possible phases of implantation; therefore you may not need to undergo all of these treatments:

As the first step, tartar removal as well as the restoration of the unaffected teeth (filling those teeth or replacing old fillings) might prove to be necessary.
This might be followed by the extraction of certain teeth.
If needed, bone augmentation, bone grafting or sinus lift should be performed. If it is not possible to use dissolvable sutures, suture removal will be scheduled for one week after the operation.
If little osteoplastic material is needed, our oral surgeon may be able to perform the implantation at the same time as bone augmentation. If it is not possible to use dissolvable sutures, suture removal will be scheduled for one week after the operation.
After the healing phase the implant is uncovered and the healing abutment is affixed to it, which the patient wears for 7-10 days.
Then the impression is taken, and our dental technician uses it to prepare your tooth replacement.

The number of steps that might follow depends on the type of tooth replacement needed. If you are to receive a few crowns or small bridges, your dentist will fix your tooth replacement one week after taking the impression. In case you are to receive a larger bridge or tooth replacement that is affixed to implants, a fit test is necessary before you can wear your final restoration in about ten days after taking the impression.

In case you do not need fillings, tooth extraction or bone augmentation, the insertion of the implant can be the first step.

While your dental treatment plan is being designed at our dental clinic, you will be informed in detail about the necessary steps to be taken.

How long is the healing phase after implantation?

When determining the healing time, your dentist and oral surgeon will assess you general health and the condition of your jaw and teeth, therefore the duration of the healing phase might be different for each patient.

The duration of the healing phase after dental implantation and the related treatments is shown below:

tooth extraction before implantation: 3-6 months, depending on the condition of the tooth to be extracted and the jaw
simple implantation without using any osteoplastic material: 3-4 months
insertion of implantation and osteoplastic material at the same time: 6 months
bone augmentation (sinus lift): 6 months
bone grafting: 7-8 months
